A Celebration of Sorts

What better way to celebrate the end of a 10 day stint with food poisoning than to celebrate at Astoria’s own Mojave Restaurant?

Pops sweetly took me on a date to celebrate my newly restored ability to eat real food and we decided to try Mojave – we’d never been there before and since Ditmars is a bit farther than we go normally, it seemed like a real night out.

First, let me say the decor was amazing – I really loved how homey yet chic everything was, right down to the detail on the celling.  We did, however, pass over the dining room and head directly outside to the lovely garden – really, a prefect oasis that could convince me we might be in Mexico or similar….certainly *not* just steps from the N/W line.

Since I’m still recovering, I opted to try the Blue Corn Enchiladas Chipotle Chicken Breast  – which was fantastic.  Granted, my lovely new penchant for heartburn kept me from adding any hot sauce, but it was still so flavorful I was in love.  Pops tried the Santa Fe Shepard’s Pie and was overjoyed with his choice, I think.  So!  Two winning entrees made us decide we shouldn’t stop there – so we dove into dessert.

I had a delicious cheesecake pastry (I can’t remember the name) that came out warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and banana pomegranate sauce.  Wow.  Pops enjoyed the Molten Center Chocolate Cake, but felt it compared too closely with those little microwaveable chocolate cakes you can buy at the supermarket.  I guess everything can’t be a complete win.

All in all, I would like to return to Mojave again – the garden and dining room were perfect and the food was generally excellent.  It was a great date with Pops and a great place to celebrate food!

The funny thing is, we started out as an online quest on bing.com and google to find a restaurant in Astoria that incorporates organic components.

While old standards like the Kungpow Chicken and General Tso’s bean curd at Mei Jia and the korma at Seva would have been an easy choice, we have started searching for healthy (and good-for-the-kid-too) menu options. Unfortunately for us, Astoria doesn’t seem to have options for those looking for restaurants that specialize in organic (ideally locally sourced) menu options.

So while Mojave’s menu didn’t mention any organic components or have very many “healthy” options, the food was tasty and the outdoor space really did make it easy to forget you were still in New York City.
